Compared to alternatives, galvanized steel pipes offer a balanced value. Stainless steel is more corrosion-resistant but far pricier, while plastic pipes lack the strength for high-pressure tasks. Galvanized pipes have a lifespan of 50+ years in mild climates and 20–30 years in harsh coastal or industrial areas, making them a long-term investment. However, there are limitations. Highly acidic or alkaline environments can accelerate zinc degradation, requiring frequent inspections. For potable water, modern galvanized pipes meet safety standards to minimize zinc leaching, but older pipes may need replacement to comply with regulations. Regular maintenance—such as repairing coating scratches—extends their service life.
